Who We Are & What We Do

The ZNCR has been conveniently located in the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals complex since inception. This is a large government tertiary referral centre which provides most of the cancer management services for the northern part of the country and is one of the 2 teaching hospitals of the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences (UZCHS). The activities of the ZNCR are guided by a 17-member constituted multidisciplinary advisory committee. The Registrar is responsible for the day-today management of the institution under the guidance of the Medical Director. The ZNCR has a staff compliment of seven, comprising the 1 x Registrar, 1 x Executive Assistant and 5 x Health Information Assistants of which 2 are based at the Bulawayo branch of the Registry. The Bulawayo branch is located in the Radiotherapy Centre at Mpilo Central Hospital in the country’s second city of Bulawayo.

The ZNCR has performed extremely well over the years. It is currently rated as a model population-based registry (PBCR) for sub-Saharan Africa. In this capacity it has been providing technical and capacity building support to other registries in the region at the request of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), WHO/AFRO, the African Cancer Registry Network (AFCRN) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Cancer Registries from South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Congo Republic, Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, the Seychelles and Swaziland have benefited from the experience and expertise of the Zimbabwean registry.

The Registry participates actively in regional and international cancer registry and surveillance activities. It is a voting member of the global International Association of Cancer Registries. It is one of the founding members of the East African Cancer Registry Network (EARN) which became the African Cancer Registry Network (AFCRN) in 2012. The ZNCR has been a member of the Research Committee of the AFCRN since 2013.  The Zimbabwean registry was privileged to host the second annual review meeting of the AFCRN in the resort town of Victoria Falls in January 2014.   The ZNCR is also a member of the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) and the Union of International Cancer Control (UICC).
